Common Symbi Terms You May Not Be Familiar With

They talk in English and it sounds like Hebrew. Do you also get puzzled with common ‘Symbi’ terms that you have no idea about and which go right over your head? Because in our first year, we sure did. But worry not, as many of you have asked us similar questions in DMs, we decided to explain some commonly used terms in Symbi. Here you go:
1. Logs:
Come Sympulse, this term becomes the word of the day… everyday. What are logs? In two words, they mean ‘excused absences’. As most of you might already know, you are required to maintain overall 75% attendance in each semester.
But with many club activities coupled with rigorous sympulse work, you might have to miss several classes. To ‘ease it’ for you guys a little, the college has the system of logs which basically means you get full attendance for these missed classes. Logs are only given for official symbi activities, signed by your heads/executives and approved by your coordinator/ assigned faculty.
2. Icebreakers:
These are the anticipatory first informal parties/get-togethers you have with your club heads and team. The main purpose behind them is to ‘break the ice’ between the new team members, and hence the term.
These also determine your equation with fellow teammates and heads. Some Icebreakers are notorious for peer pressure but remember, no one will make you do anything against your wish if you stand your ground.
3. Core and Crew:
When it comes to performing clubs (Drammebaaz, Step Up, and Encore), the team is divided into two parts- Core and Crew. The core generally has 8-10 members and they handle management, backend work, and other activities of the club along with performing in events.
While the crew (has no particular limit to member count) mainly does performances. However, most clubs do little differentiation between core and crew. And if you miss out on the core team (whose applications will be rolled out first), you can wait for crew applications and apply again. So, you get two chances. Yayy!
4. JCC:
Just like clubs, Sympulse wings and departments also have sort of an extended team which only helps them manage the events after plans have been made and ideation has been done.
This team is called the Junior Core Committee(JCC) which does not go through interviews to get selected and members are taken randomly because they only ‘assist’ the core.
It’s a great option if you didn’t make it to the core team and still wanna get a little involved in Sympulse. But remember, you MAY have to follow orders from your own batchmates which sometimes may not sound very pleasing.
5. TNG/CNG:
AKA Term Not Granted/Course Not Granted. In simple terms, you failed, bro, you gotta take the test again (oops). Term not granted means you have to repeat all the courses of the semester and take the tests again.
It happens when either you fail tests or don’t have enough attendance to sit for the exams. CNG means you failed one particular course (subject) and will carry its backlog. Coming to backlog…
6. Backlog:
You necessarily have to complete all the credits of all the subjects in each semester. However, if you fail one or more, the credits of these subjects sort of become pending.
And you will have to take the test for these subjects again in your next semester alongside your regular classes for that semester. In short, it’s all a big burden guys. Focus on your internals and keep track of your attendance.
7. GR/CR/AR/etc etc:
These are acronyms for various positions or departments.
GR: General Representative (student council member) OR Guest Relations (Sympulse department)
CR: Cultural Representative (council member) OR Class representative (your annoying but sometimes helpful class monitors)
AR: Academic Representative OR Alumni Representative (both council members)
IR: International Representative (council member)
8. Hira’s/High Spirits:
If you hear these names or something similar, don’t fret. They are the usual hangout spots of symbi kids around college.
These terms are not chosen by us but are taken from the questions we received from you guys. Hope everything is clear. If you’re scratching your head at some other ‘symbi’ term, drop us a text!
DISCLAIMER: There is a possibility of formats changing this year. We will keep you guys updated if there is any change anywhere.
